2016-17 OHSAA D2 STATE BOYS BOWLING TOURNAMENT AT WAYNE WEBB’S COLUMBUS BOWL IN COLUMBUS, OHIO (Scores reflect totals at the end of qualifying rounds.)
The Bulldogs went into the tournament as one of the 16 best high school bowling teams in the state of Ohio all looking for a state crown. The tournament format included three regular ten pin games and three team baker games. Following the field would be cut to the top 8 for a head to head best out of five baker game championship bracket. The Bulldogs were in 4th place after the first game with a score of 989. Following game two they fell to 7th place with an 890 game. The Bulldogs continued to drop with an 851 in game three causing them to move down into 10th place. Knowing they would need a strong baker series to make the top eight, the Bulldogs refocused and put together three solid baker games (214, 192 & 173). Their 579 baker series was just enough to push them up to the number 8 seed by only three pins over the 9 seed (Elmore Woodmore).
In the first round of the championship bracket the Bulldogs would have to face the #1 seed and 3 time state champions, Coldwater High School. In a back and forth battle the Bulldogs took the match by a score of 3-2 (189-183, 143-172, 215-197, 176-206 & 233-202). One fan compared the match to the Buster Douglas upset of Mike Tyson.
In the semi-final round the Bulldogs were matched up with the #4 seed, St. Mary’s Memorial. Despite becoming the crowd favorite after knocking off the #1 seed and the support of many Bulldog parents, family members, former bowlers and league rivals from Crestwood (finished 12th) and Garfield, the team was eliminated by St.Mary’s 3-1. St. Mary went on to win the state championship 3-0 over Hillsboro.
Congratulations to the 2016-17 Bulldog Bowling Team for finishing 4th in state and for an outstanding season!
