Woodridge junior Gavin Genovese once again proved he belongs among Ohio’s elite wrestlers, finishing second overall at 120 pounds in Division II at the OHSAA State Wrestling Championships, held March 13–15 in Columbus.
With his performance, Genovese earned All-Ohio honors for the second straight year and became a back-to-back state finalist, continuing an already remarkable high school career.
Genovese entered the state tournament riding strong momentum after impressive showings at both the sectional and district levels. Competing against the top wrestlers in the state, he battled his way through a highly competitive bracket to reach the Division II 120-pound championship match.
He ultimately finished the season with an outstanding 47–3 record, with all three losses coming against state finalists — including two against eventual state champions — highlighting the level of competition he faced throughout the year.
This season builds on an already impressive résumé. As a sophomore, Genovese captured the Division II state title at 113 pounds, winning the championship in dramatic fashion with an overtime victory in the finals. Moving up a weight class this year, he once again demonstrated his resilience, skill, and consistency on the sport’s biggest stage.
With another deep tournament run and continued success at the highest level, Genovese has firmly established himself as one of the premier wrestlers in Ohio.
The Woodridge community has plenty to be proud of as he looks ahead to his senior season.
Great job, Gavin — Go Bulldogs!
